A healthy and bright smile is one of the first things that people notice about you. Following these 10 simple tips will keep your smile nice, white, and bright for years to come.

 

Good habits start young

Children need to be taught right away the importance of good oral hygiene. Before your child even has any teeth, you should use a damp washcloth to wipe their gums at least once a day. When your child’s first tooth appears, start brushing regularly. It is important for your child that tooth brushing is a part of his/her daily routine right from the beginning.

 

Use the right equipment

Use a soft bristle toothbrush. If your toothbrush is too hard or you brush too aggressively, it can damage your gums and wear away tooth enamel. Use fluoride toothpaste as fluoride helps to strengthen tooth enamel and fight tooth decay. Remember to replace your toothbrush whenever it shows signs of wear-and-tear. In general, you should be replacing your toothbrush 3-4 times a year. You should also consider purchasing an electric toothbrush if you have trouble perfecting the correct tooth brushing technique with a manual brush. Electric toothbrushes can remove more plaque which therefore is better for your gums.

 

Brush at least twice a day

Teeth should be cleaned at least twice a day in order to reduce plaque, deter gum disease, and ward off tooth decay. It is even better if you can brush your teeth after every meal.

 

Floss at least once a day

Flossing helps to remove plaque and food particles that build up between the teeth. Keep flossers in your car, purse, and office so that you can get food out of your teeth after lunch or after snacking.

 

Visit the dentist or periodontist every 6-months

Routine dental visits promote good oral health and lead to early detection of any dental issues.

 

Eat Healthy

A well-balanced diet is essential to maintaining a healthy smile. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables as well as foods rich in vitamins and minerals. Avoid sugary drinks and snacks.

 

Drink a lot of water

Drinking water cleans your teeth and flushes out food particles. It is by far the best drink for your teeth and smile.

 

Avoid Tobacco

Tobacco products stain your teeth and increase your risk of gum disease and oral cancer. In fact, smokers are four to six times more at risk for tooth loss than a non-smoker.

 

Limit Coffee, Tea and Wine

Like tobacco products, these dark liquids can stain your teeth. Frequently rinse your mouth out with water when drinking these beverages so that the dark liquids do not linger in your mouth for long periods of time.

 

Use a mouth guard

If you play any contact sports, wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth. The last thing you want is a surprise hit or fall to ruin your beautiful smile.
